Comparison
Ahrefs is the better default for independent SEO work because it has a useful verified-site free account and a far lower paid entry point. Choose Semrush when you need its broader SEO workflow, a seven-day trial, or AI visibility tracking as part of Semrush One.

The 30-second answer
Choose Ahrefs if you mainly research competitors, backlinks, keywords, and your own sites. Its free verified-site access and $29 Starter plan make it easier to begin. Choose Semrush when structured SEO reporting, content workflow tools, or AI visibility tracking are central to your work.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs wins as the default because the route from checking one verified site to paid research is simpler and less expensive. Its free account is limited to sites you verify, but it is useful for an owner who needs to audit and monitor their own site before paying.
The recommendation changes for buyers who need a wider guided SEO workflow. Semrush offers its SEO Toolkit on a seven-day trial and its Semrush One plans add AI visibility tracking. Those capabilities can justify the higher entry price when they match a real reporting or search-discovery need.
Backlink and keyword research tools built on one of the web's biggest crawlers.
A deep SEO and AI-search toolkit for keyword research, site audits, and competitor tracking.
Freelancers and small business owners
You want to audit, monitor, and research your own verified website before committing to a subscription.
Priority: Low-risk evaluation and a limited monthly budget
Choose Ahrefs
Choose Ahrefs. Its free account is designed around verified projects, and Starter costs $29 per month when you need research on an unverified competitor or keyword data.
Small marketing teams and agencies
You need keyword tracking, site audits, scheduled reporting, and a shared process across several client or company websites.
Priority: Workflow breadth and report-ready limits
Choose Semrush
Choose Semrush when its SEO Toolkit limits and workflow tools match how your team reports. The Guru plan adds historical data, multi-target tracking, and Looker Studio reporting integration.
Brands with an AI-search measurement need
You want prompt tracking and reporting for visibility across AI-powered discovery surfaces, not only standard organic rankings.
Priority: AI visibility needs to be part of the same subscription
Choose Semrush
Choose Semrush One. Its plans bundle the SEO Toolkit with AI Visibility features, including prompt tracking. Check the plan and user access costs before treating it as a team-wide tool.
Independent SEO consultants
You spend much of the week opening competitor reports, filtering data, and researching backlinks and keywords for several sites.
Priority: High research volume after the entry tier
Choose Ahrefs
Choose Ahrefs if you expect to outgrow credit-based Starter or Lite usage. Current Standard and higher plans use unlimited fair usage for viewing, searching, sorting, and filtering, while other limits still apply.
Creators and early-stage businesses
You mainly need to write and publish content, but do not own a site to verify or need competitor research, rank tracking, or a site audit.
Priority: No budget for specialist SEO research
Choose Neither product
Choose neither for now. Use your site platform and search analytics first, then return when you have a clear SEO question that needs a specialist research database.

Ahrefs has the edge
AhrefsAhrefs offers free access for your own verified sites, then a $29 monthly Starter plan for limited wider research.
SemrushSemrush offers a seven-day SEO Toolkit trial, then starts its Pro plan at $139.95 per month.
Why it matters: The difference is not only price. Ahrefs gives an owner a path to learn from their own site without a deadline, while Semrush gives a short window to test a broader paid workflow.
Semrush has the edge
AhrefsStarter includes 200 credits, one unverified project, 50 tracked keywords, and no additional users. Most report actions outside Site Audit and Rank Tracker consume credits.
SemrushPro includes five monitored websites, 500 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl pages per month, and scheduled PDF reports.
Why it matters: A low Ahrefs price does not mean it is a direct substitute for a fuller team workflow. If recurring rank tracking and reporting are the core job, Semrush Pro may fit sooner despite its higher cost.
Ahrefs has the edge
AhrefsCurrent Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise plans use unlimited fair usage for data viewing, searching, sorting, and filtering, alongside their separate plan limits.
SemrushSemrush publishes plan-specific limits for websites, tracked keywords, crawled pages, report results, and keyword metric updates.
Why it matters: For a consultant who repeatedly investigates many competitors, usage rules can matter as much as the headline price. Compare the limits against actual weekly research volume before upgrading.
Semrush has the edge
AhrefsAhrefs has AI-related features with limits that vary by plan.
SemrushSemrush One combines the SEO Toolkit with AI Visibility features such as prompt tracking and AI visibility reporting.
Why it matters: Choose Semrush only if measuring discovery in AI answers is a defined part of your work. It is not a reason to pay more if standard organic SEO remains the only practical priority.
Ahrefs has the edge
You can verify ownership of the site and only need monitoring and limited analysis for that property.
Ahrefs is the practical lower-risk start for an owner. This does not provide open-ended competitor research on unverified sites.
Check the pricing sourceAhrefs has the edge
One user wants keyword and competitor research and pays month to month.
Ahrefs is cheaper to enter. Semrush costs far more but supplies a larger recurring SEO Toolkit allowance. Choose on the work you will repeat, not on feature lists alone.
Check the pricing sourceAhrefs has the edge
One person needs meaningful research access and daily tracking for several client or company sites.
Ahrefs has the lower published monthly price and more tracked keywords at these entry paid tiers. Its credit rules still matter if your work involves frequent report opening and filtering.
Check the pricing sourceTie
You need a mid-tier plan for several sites, substantial rank tracking, and repeatable client or stakeholder reporting. Extra seats may add separate costs.
The headline price is almost the same, but the workflows are not. Ahrefs suits research-heavy work. Semrush suits teams that will use its reporting and planning features. Check seat costs and exact limits before signing an annual contract.
Check the pricing sourceRun the eligible Semrush trial against a real reporting cycle. Confirm the website, keyword, user, and AI visibility access limits before ending the existing subscription.
Check whether Ahrefs Lite credits will cover the work first. If not, price Standard against your real research volume because current Standard and higher plans use unlimited fair usage for data viewing.
This comparison is research-led. We reviewed current official pricing, plan limits, product documentation, support material, and practical workflow fit. Hands-on observations are noted only when available.
At the published entry tiers, yes. Ahrefs Starter costs $29 per month, while Semrush SEO Toolkit Pro costs $139.95 per month. They have different limits, so compare the allowance you need rather than treating them as identical plans.
Ahrefs has a free account for projects you verify you own. It is useful for your own site, not as a free way to research any competitor. Its paid Starter plan adds limited research on unverified sites.
Most Semrush toolkits, including the SEO Toolkit, offer an eligible seven-day trial. Trial availability is limited to once per account and exports are disabled during trials.
Choose Semrush when your agency will use its workflow features, historical data, multi-targeting, and reporting integration. Choose Ahrefs when deep recurring research and its Standard-plan usage model fit your work better. Neither answer replaces checking seats, tracked keywords, and reporting needs.
Ahrefs is the better starting point for most independent buyers because it offers a useful verified-site free account and a $29 paid entry tier. Semrush is the better deliberate choice for teams that will use its broader SEO workflow or Semrush One AI visibility tracking. If you only need to publish content and have no research budget, choose neither yet.
